Who was Cassandra?

  • In the Iliad, she is described as the loveliest of the daughters of Priam (King of Troy), and gifted with prophecy. The god Apollo loved her, but she spurned him. As a punishment, he decreed that no one would ever believe her. So when she told her fellow Trojans that the Greeks were hiding inside the wooden horse...well, you know what happened.

37) Have you ever eaten dog food?

We make Zeke's food. A cup brown rice, a can white meat chicken, in the food processor until the consistency of dog food.
It's not bad.

Sounds good, actually. Having grown up in a town where they MAKE dogfood is probably an off-putting factor. Dog food is cooked -- and believe me, you don't want to know what goes into it, or how it makes the town smell.

I was afraid of the dark for a week about 25 years ago.
I was about to quit a job for the first time and I was agonizing over the decision.
Now, outside my apartment, the city was repaving River Street and had planted 55-gallon drums in holes where new manholes were to go. One night, some kids in a probably stolen car started racing up the street to see how many barrels they could clip.
Half awake and stressed-out as usual, I heard a rolling "boom ... boom" that sounded at first like thunder, then like cannon fire. A few seconds later, there came a "Boom" from down the street and "BOOM!!" in front of the house, and I leaped from bed, shouted something and ripped down the blinds to see what it was.
The uproar that followed took a while to sort out.
The next day the police told me about the car and said it had left its oil pan at the east end of the street. I went home feeling less mystified.
But that night, I couldn't shake a feeling there was something in the shadowy corner by the closet. Even when I went over there, I couldn't convince myself it was all in my mind. It took at least a week to go away, but -- I got over it completely when I left the job.

What a great story!
